I decided some time ago that I'd prefer the potential risk of an attack to the definite downside of living my life in a scared, hedged-in manner.

That's it, exactly. "If you stay in your house all the time, the muggers have already won."

It is likely that one day I will be mugged.

Sadly true. But I decided some time ago that there's nothing in my pockets for which it's worth endangering my person: "your money or your life" is a no-brainer for me. If somebody demands my wallet, I suspect the best self-defence move will be to just hand it over. (Under normal circs anybody claiming my wallet would get about 2 quid in small change, a handful of useless credit cards and reward cards, and half a dozen postage stamps.)
