Fixing to live
Ages ago I posted about things that needed fixing. Yesterday I finally finished fixing my suitcase (I've not exactly been very proactive about fixing it... I managed to saw the original rivets off a couple of months ago, and managed to find some screws a few weeks ago, and yesterday I finally got round to not only sawing up a small block of wood into two chunks into which the screws could go but also actually putting these elements together and finishing the job). So it's only taken me about four months to fix the damn thing, though I've used it in the meantime (it was fine as a suitcase, just didn't stand up properly). I'm really glad I've fixed it though: it only cost me £3.50 from a charity shop and I've now been using it for 4 and a half years so I think it's doing pretty well.

addedentry's wardrobe fell apart (it was one of those cheap wood-frame-and-canvas-cover jobs, and the pole that holds the clothes was propped up on about 5mm of pine at each end, and basically the weight of clothes on it finally dragged it through that 5mm of wood), and yesterday we a) fixed the wardrobe (by turning the bit of wood with the support for the pole upside-down, so the pole's got a new bit of wood to rest on) and b) put up a metal clothes-rail by actually drilling into the actual wall. This is the first time we've actually drilled anything without help from proper grown-ups, and it hasn't fallen down yet, even with addedentry's clothes on it!
The rail also meant that we could use the space under the rail to house the spare dining table (don't ask), which meant that a load of suitcases and stuff could go under the table, which gave us much more space in the spare room, so today we've been able to move the smallest bookcase from the living room into the spare room, which gets us one stage closer to being able to turn the living room into a dining room. (We also managed to get rid of four bookcases as a result of the new SHELVES -- which I am still inordinately pleased with, especially now they're full of books -- which gets us several stages closer to being able to turn the dining room into a living room. At some point these plans will hopefully converge.)
The next stage, I think, is to get more shelves fitted in the alcove in the living room, which would allow me to put the piano music on there & get rid of the other bookcase in the living room. THEN we'd have to somehow get rid of two bookcases full of books from the dining room so there's room in there for the sofa so we can turn it into the living room. This, however, is the sticking point: I can't actually think of any way to do this, other than by a) getting fitted shelves along the whole wall of the front room (expensive), or b) getting rid of approx 200 books. Does anybody want 200 books...?
Mind you the other possibility would be to get rid of all the cardboard boxes (because they're taking up an entire room-sized cupboard which could be used for the games/DVDs/videos which are currently taking up some of the bookcase space), but the boxes are useful. They're the sort of thing that should be in the loft, though, & we don't have any usable loft space at all (it's full of insulationand mice). I always feel that if I had just one more cupboard everything would be manageable...
At some point this plan also has to result in clearing a load more stuff out of what will eventually be Sprocket's room. Hopefully, though, we can sort out that space as fast as (or faster than) she grows; there's room in there for a moses basket at the moment (though I'm expecting she'll stay in our room while she's little enough for the basket), there'll be room for a cot in there by the time she needs one, and room for a proper bed in a couple of years.
Anyway, all I really wanted to say was that I was pleased that we'd finally got round to fixing some things and moving some furniture around and generally making the house a bit more manageable. And this whole burst of productivity seems to have been unlocked by getting the curtain rail up in our bedroom (that was the first thing on the list & I think it was causing us to put off doing everything else...), so we havetimscience to thank! :-)
