Don't forget the songs that made you smile

New meme, new danger. Doubles as a lyrics quiz if you don't want to include citations.

Pick one song lyric which...

... describes the way you feel about your life:

"No matter how fast I run, I can never seem to get away from me;
No matter where I am
I can't help feeling I'm just a day away from where I want to be..."

... describes the way you feel about love:

"Maybe I've never really loved,
I guess that is the truth;
I've spent my whole life in clouds at icy altitudes"

... can always make you smile:

"That's nobody's business but the Turks'"

... can always make you cry:

"And I had a feeling that I belonged
And I had feeling I could be someone, be someone..."

... is a good motto to live by:

"You can only go so far in your mind"

... would make a good t-shirt slogan for you:

"Please stop loving me
Please stop loving me
I am none of these things"

Istanbul^WConstantinople

Ah, but the song is called "Istanbul" ... :)

`Or else it doesn't, you know. The name of the song is called "HADDOCKS' EYES."'

`Oh, that's the name of the song, is it?' Alice said, trying to feel interested.

`No, you don't understand,' the Knight said, looking a little vexed. `That's what the name is CALLED. The name really IS "THE AGED AGED MAN."'

`Then I ought to have said "That's what the SONG is called"?' Alice corrected herself.

`No, you oughtn't: that's quite another thing! The SONG is called "WAYS AND MEANS": but that's only what it's CALLED, you know!'

`Well, what IS the song, then?' said Alice, who was by this time completely bewildered.

`I was coming to that,' the Knight said. `The song really IS "A-SITTING ON A GATE"

Point(er) taken.

The name of the song is called "HADDOCKS' EYES."

And what do you think they made of his eyes?
(Sing aber o vane, sing aber o linn.)
The finest dishes that ever held pies.
(Sing aber o vane, sing aber o linn.)

Sing herring, sing eyes, sing dishes, sing pies
(Sing aber o vane, sing aber o linn.)
And indeed I have more of my herring to sing...
(Sing aber o vane, sing aber o linn.)

OK, I'll bite

describes the way you feel about life

"the wind's in the north, there'll be new moon tonight
and we have no circle to dance in his sight
so light a torch, bring a bottle, and build the fire bright;
the giant will rise with the moon"

describes the way you feel about love

"I've seen your flag on the marble arch
But love is not a victory march
It's a cold and very lonely hallelujah"

can always make you smile:

"and on top
of your fee
you'll be involved artistically"

can always make you cry:

"But no penny of mine will I add to the fray.
"Remember the Boyne!" they will cry out in vain,
For I've given my heart to the place I was born
And forgiven the whole House of Orange"

is a good motto to live by:

"and I know the world is cold
but if you hold on tight to what you find
you might not mind too much
that even this must pass away"

would make a good t-shirt slogan for you:

"everybody knows that you've been discreet
so many people you just had to meet
without your clothes"

Wow, I only know one of those (Cohen, of course). They're good lyrics though.

even this must pass away

[thinks: "Þæs ofereode, þisses swa mæg."]

There's more than one Cohen in here.

describes the way you feel about life

-- Stan Rogers, "Giant"

describes the way you feel about love

-- Leonard Cohen, "Hallelujah"

can always make you smile:

-- a snippet from Moulin Rouge

can always make you cry:

-- Stan Rogers, "House of Orange". Full lyrics here (http://stevebriggs.superb.net/stanrogers/songs/hoo-sng.html). This is the song that decided me on wanting to live in Canada; anywhere these sentiments are both a spontaneous natural expression of feeling and safe to sing is a colossal paradigm shift for the better from what I grew up with.

is a good motto to live by:

-- Sisters of Mercy, "Some Kind of Stranger"

would make a good t-shirt slogan for you:

-- Leonard Cohen, "Everybody Knows"

Ah another one that always makes me go shivery inside. Have you heard Jeff Buckley's rendition?

[identity profile] rysmiel.livejournal.com 2003-03-20 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. And gosh did it give me a start to hear that used in Shrek.

[identity profile] j4.livejournal.com 2003-03-20 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
Except that it's not Jeff Buckley singing it in Shrek, it's Rufus Wainwright --though he's obviously strongly influenced by Buckley's rendition.

(Ha! Do I get Extra Sad Muso Points? ;-)

[identity profile] hoiho.livejournal.com 2003-03-21 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
No, 'cos on the *film* it's Cale's version, but the soundtrack CD has Rufus Wainwright instead. Dunno why, though.

But, if you like Cohen done by other people, buy, beg, borrow or steal (or ask me for a burn) of "I'm Your Fan". It' sublime, silly, and sexy by turns.

I have a thing I haven't got round to posting for you. Hopefully it's a nice thing :)

In an uncomnected aside, do you own a badger fingerpuppet? ΓΌ

[identity profile] j4.livejournal.com 2003-03-20 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I do own a badger fingerpuppet! Bought one just last weekend.

Look forward to seeing the nice thing, whatever it is... :)

Curses. I had that idea about a week ago and was too lazy to formulate it. There look, I almost started a meme.

Pick one song lyric which...

... describes the way you feel about your life:

... describes the way you feel about love:
Just when I thought everything would be alright
                                             its not
Just when I thought nothing could go wrong
                                             it does
Just when I thought, that I might be alright
                                             I slide
Just when I thought, there is no place to hide
                                              I hide

... is a good motto to live by:

"No more stop signs, speed limits,
nobody's gonna slow me down"

... can always make you smile:
You're just another, money-spinner tool
You're just another, fool

... can always make you cry:
"I bin dei Julia", host gsogt, "Du bist mei Romeo"
A Zeitlang host a glaubt des is wirklich wahr
Aber des Traman host valernt in de Jahr
Und heute glaubst an nix

(This won't be understandable for anyone not familiar with Vienna's slang, so here's the same lines of the original song:
I was gonna be your Romeo you were gonna be my Juliet
These days you don't wait on Romeo's you wait on that welfare check
and on all the pretty things that you can't ever have and on all the promises
... would make a good t-shirt slogan for you:

"I am the media,
mmmm, own ya,
I am the media,
soon I will own you."
