The drugs don't work

Lindt 85% chocolate. Mmmmm. Medicinal, see. For the iron. But I can't pretend I'm not enjoying the dark bitter chocolateyness.

I forgot to mention the coffee I had at the Eraina before going to see Tell me on a Sunday (on Monday). It was Greek coffee. It came in a cup that was smaller than my clenched fist, and it looked solid, and even drinking it through gritted teeth left my mouth well and truly gritted with coffee ground. But that wasn't all. In fact, I hardly noticed the grit after the first few mouthfuls, because of the caffeine hit. Not the vibrating-eyeballs kind of caffeine hit that you get from too much nasty coffee, or the palpitations-and-headache that you get from too much strong filter coffee; no, this was a pure white hot rush of caffeine. My words started falling over each other in my futile attempt to talk as fast as I was thinking, and I felt the skin of my face tightening, and realised I was grinning for no reason at all. Who needs illegal drugs when you can sit in a dark, warm cosy restaurant and be served a tasty cupful of a drug like this for only £2.30?

At this point, I'm trying to avoid doing that kind of thing, because I'm more desensitised to caffeine than I would like by a long shot. I'd rather have that as an option when I need it, than get to the point where I had to take that much just to be functional, and I can see that point from here.

Ah, I am definitely not functional on that much caffeine. But not-functional in an entertaining way. It's like E, only without having to pretend to like everybody. ;)

[identity profile] rysmiel.livejournal.com 2004-09-15 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm functional on it, for values of functional translating to stay up all night, do one particular thing obsessively, take people's heads off if they interrupt, and need the equivalent of a couple of pints at the end to get human again; it's really nice to be in a situation where I have not actually needed to do that for some considerable amount of time.

Lindt 85% chocolate

Offers some G&B dark chocolate with Espresso :)

[identity profile] j4.livejournal.com 2004-09-15 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
Ooo, ooh. Mmmm. I would like to try that, definitely. How dark is their dark, percentage-wise?

[identity profile] simonb.livejournal.com 2004-09-15 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
The one with espresso in is 70% dark. However the espresso really adds to it.

They also do one which is dark chocolate (70% again) with ginger.

85% is arguably medicinal; 99% is definitely a drug. It turns people into the anime versions of themselves, all huge eyes and hyperkinesis.

kawai! :)

I gotta try that sometime.

[identity profile] rysmiel.livejournal.com 2004-09-15 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
In all seriousness; if you do, start with about a quarter of a square [ that's a sensible dose for a person weighing ten and a half stone, adjusting for body mass is no bad plan ] and do not bite into it, let it melt. There's a difference between "chocolate rush" and "chocolate blitzkrieg" and my body at least does not want to play with the second.

[identity profile] j4.livejournal.com 2004-09-15 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
Tchah, lightweight!

As for "let it melt" ... you think you can stop it melting? It's all I can do to get the squares from the packet to my mouth in one piece. Still, I figure you can probably absorb caffeine through the skin, so what the hell.

Hell, yeah. "Ration thy vices, for thy central nervous system's sake..."

My alcohol tolerance has gone through the floor in the past couple of years, too. two pints and I'm a puddle.

Good value.

Chocolate blitzkrieg sounds interesting.

I am the anime version of myself. Perhaps I need more chocolate.

Where can you get it?

[identity profile] j4.livejournal.com 2004-09-16 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Here (http://www.rococochocolates.com/) (see under 'chocolate bars', it's called 'plus noir que noir' -- don't even be tempted to look at the other stuff on the site because it's an instant route to delicious chocolatey bankruptcy), and probably elsewhere. Actually, there's an Algerian coffee shop in Soho that sells the stuff, I think it's this one (http://www.londontown.com/LondonInformation/Alexa/Algerian_Coffee_Stores/2df3/).

Ooh. Aha, they appear to be based on the King's Road, which is doable-by-bike at lunchtime from work. Splendid - cheers!
