Rattling blog

What every Mac user wants for Christmas: Susan Kare t-shirts. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] brrm for the tip. (The Linux user in your life may be more interested in this.)

Less (fewer!) thanks to [livejournal.com profile] spyinthehaus for introducing me to an unhealthy addiction. It's not that I'm not grateful, it's just that I could have done with getting some work done this month. Really busy people are recommended to try this version of space invaders instead.

Now, on an unrelated note, friends will know that I'm all for a bit of healthy antici ....... pation; but for a really nasty cliffhanger, the NHS's online doctor takes the biscuit. Electrodes? You can't leave it there, dammit!

And finally, a nice slice of fill-in-the-blanks procrastination, borrowed from [livejournal.com profile] barrysarll:

I am not : easily led
I love : not wisely but too well
I hate : thoughtlessness
I fear : nothing but fear itself
I hope : even now, despite myself
I hear : rain falling outside my window
I crave : salad
I regret : the things I didn't do
I cry : less than I used to
I care : far too much
I always : keep talking
I believe : that it matters
I feel alone : at nights
I listen : to the silences between things
I hide : out in the open
I drive : carefully
I sing : enthusiastically
I dance : like there's nobody watching
I write : to prove I exist
I play : well with others
I miss : most things I aim at
I search : with Google
I learn : something new every day
I feel : everything too intensely
I know : just how much I don't know
I say : what I think and what I mean
I dream : things of chaotic beauty
I wonder : about everything
I want : more life
I have : too many material things
I give : all that I can
I fell : or maybe I jumped
I fight : when I must
I need : an audience

*faints*

Okay, I've had a good look at this Penguin Warehouse. They surely cannot be serious. Everyone knows rockhoppers are inveterately vicious with humans and about as practical a pet as a wolverine! :|

[identity profile] hoiho.livejournal.com 2004-10-14 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
And they don't have any Hoihos.

[identity profile] panzerpenguin.livejournal.com 2004-10-14 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
Nor any little blues either, for that matter.

[identity profile] hoiho.livejournal.com 2004-10-14 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
They prefer to be knows as Kororaa. Well, the southern ones do.
Eudyptula minor, not that noisy Northen ones, Eudyptula albosignata

[identity profile] j4.livejournal.com 2004-10-14 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
OMG... it's a penguin-fancier convention on my LJ!!

[identity profile] hoiho.livejournal.com 2004-10-14 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
Would you prefer a pervy badger-fancier convention?

[identity profile] panzerpenguin.livejournal.com 2004-10-14 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
My housemate galliana (http://www.livejournal.com/users/galliana) is keen on badgers...

[identity profile] j4.livejournal.com 2004-10-14 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
No! I'd prefer a perfectly innocent badger-fancier convention, with lots of badgers, and tea and cake.

[identity profile] burkesworks.livejournal.com 2004-10-14 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
More civilised than penguins then, considering they only eat fish.

[identity profile] panzerpenguin.livejournal.com 2004-10-14 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
And squid, shellfish and pork luncheon meat.

[identity profile] burkesworks.livejournal.com 2004-10-14 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, you're thinking of Henri Bergson.

[identity profile] panzerpenguin.livejournal.com 2004-10-14 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
If penguins do eat Henri Bergson, then David Attenborough has been extremely discrete about it.

[identity profile] hoiho.livejournal.com 2004-10-15 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
and tea and cake

Wot, no salad?

[identity profile] j4.livejournal.com 2004-10-15 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
You can have too much salad. Sometimes a girl just needs tea and cake.

[identity profile] hoiho.livejournal.com 2004-10-15 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
tea and cake

Hmm, doesn't sound right to me; coffee and cake (Kaffe und Kuchen), tea and sympathy, beer and sandwiches, yes; but not tea and cake.

[identity profile] j4.livejournal.com 2004-10-15 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Shrug. Works for me.

Earl Grey and a slice of sponge cake, for preference.

[identity profile] hoiho.livejournal.com 2004-10-15 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes, the combination works, but the phrase just sounds tin to my ear. Dunno why.

I could do with a nice bit of sponge cake right now.

[identity profile] j4.livejournal.com 2004-10-15 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps you prefer "tea and cakes and ices".

[identity profile] hoiho.livejournal.com 2004-10-15 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that sounds nice.

I rather like the nice distinction that the National Garden Scheme makes in the annual "Yellow Book". Where it says "Tea" it means tea and biscuits, but "Teas" means tea and cakes. Maybe even Cream teas...

[identity profile] hoiho.livejournal.com 2004-10-14 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yes; Northen in the range of the little penguins - Tasmania, and the like. The southern ones are found in NZ.

Actually, you can find penguins (the Galapagos, Spheniscus Mendiculus) prettu much at the equator.

[identity profile] panzerpenguin.livejournal.com 2004-10-14 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
In fact, they prefer to be known by a name not found in any human language... ;)

[identity profile] hoiho.livejournal.com 2004-10-14 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
The Naming of CatsPenguins is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a catpenguin must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.

[identity profile] panzerpenguin.livejournal.com 2004-10-14 09:39 am (UTC)(link)
My cats are, of course, honorary penguins. They are after all black and white (collectively) and eat fish.

[identity profile] j4.livejournal.com 2004-10-14 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter

But the impression persists after knowing you for a while, too.

[identity profile] j4.livejournal.com 2004-10-14 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
They surely cannot be serious.

Er, yes. Well done. :)

[identity profile] panzerpenguin.livejournal.com 2004-10-14 09:29 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmph. I suppose you'll be telling me next that there aren't trained penguins working as bank tellers inside cash machines?

I always make sure to squawk politely at the cash machine penguins when I take out money.

[identity profile] besskeloid.livejournal.com 2004-10-14 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
I am not: going to fill in any more sodding memes.
