Home Sweet Home

I got back home last night, and am now safely ensconced in a house which not only has BROADBAND but also wireless networking. This would be ace but for the fact that my room is the furthest thing possible from the wireless basestation. As a teenager I remember furtively contorting myself in my room with a TV aerial to try to improve the signal on my tiny black-and-white TV such that I could distinguish the naked nuns from the white noise; I'm back to doing the same thing now, but with a laptop instead of an aerial. Less of the naked nuns, though, and more of the iTunes and iChat. Instant messaging is more fun than I thought; I message my sister "u smell of sick heh heh :-P" and we cackle with laughter; my dad messages me just to test the system and I send him more LOL-ing leetspeak. He signs off. The three of us are using PowerBooks, and the room is warm and shiny with mac hardware; my mum gives the remote control for the TV to the toy badger that's sitting beside me on the sofa ("he looked left out") and then goes back to her book.

Yet I always forget just how peaceful this house is, even with all the affectionate insults and laughter and injokes and chaos and music that abound here; it's comfortable, like old boots (or old books, of which my room is still full) or soft sofas. The curtains in my room are so thick that I can sleep forever if uninterrupted; I woke at 12:05pm, and Lorna would probably still be sleeping now if we hadn't woken her up at 2:15pm. Tomorrow she and I will have our traditional session of haggling over the time that she can wake me on Christmas morning; she opens the bidding at 6 a.m., I start at 10 a.m., and we arrive at a midpoint somewhere around 8 a.m. (rather too early for me). Tonight will see the equally-traditional rituals of decorating the tree -- rituals which would make no sense anywhere outside the family, and which I couldn't even call to mind now; they will only be unlocked by the keys of the decorations themselves, lifted carefully from their packaging.

Perhaps I'll write about that tomorrow. Or perhaps I'll just sleep in, get up late, wander around the house, and luxuriate in the knowledge that despite all my plans for reading, writing, and otherwise constructively faffing, I don't really need to do anything or be anywhere. I am happy here.

But I always thought you grew up in Loughborough, not in Italy! I'm sure that Signor Berlusconi's meejah empire never quite reached north Leicestershire at the time, and the BBC and ATV were never particularly big in the naked nuns department IIRC.

mmmm, I like it! Would you be able to burn me a copy of OS X for MidlandsM34t then (grovel)? Now if only OS X.5 could be called "Badger".
Nice to see you happy and comfy and on broadband, not noticed much of your patent wibbling for a few days and believe me it leaves a hole in the flist.

I'll have a go if my dad's got any CDRs left ... if I don't get it done for the Midlandmeat I'll post one to you later. See reply to next comment for explanation of naked nuns...

That all sounds so lovely and cosy and soothing, I'm very glad you have such a home to go to, and I wish you and yours all the very best of holidays.

And did the frequency of naked nuns on TV really go up that much in the span between your teenage years and mine ? Non-zero would have been an increase.

I wish I could send you a bit of the home I have here.

Re naked nuns: I was thinking of Ken Russell's The Devils (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066993/), which I stayed up till the small hours of the morning to watch just because of the promise of naked lesbian nuns. But there was also a lot of rubbish on C4 like Eurotrash and The Word which would have had naked nuns if it could. And C4 did a season of "Dyke TV" which I watched religiously (in fact, since we're on the subject of nuns, you could say I made a habit of it...) as it was practically my only lifeline to real lesbians, and some of them were probably nuns...

The home I have here, now, is an extremely good and happy one, and please don't be sad for me on that account, I will have a good holiday; I was more wisting at the ways in which your birth family sounds more... harmonious is not the word, but I can't find the word exactly, than Christmas with my birth family felt like to me.

I have actually seen The Devils. Lots of Oliver Reed and no naked nuns until the end, IIRC. Not that I mind Oliver Reed a priori - he was wonderful in the Richard Leicester Musketeers films frex - but he's certainly not the first person to some to mind if I were trying to imagine someone over whom a convent full of nuns would go into a sexual frenzy.

Oh and thank you for the Christmas card! I do have a Christmas present for you but I missed the posting date for Foreign Parts and then decided it would be less likely to get lost if I waited until after the Christmas rush to post it. ... I am disorganised, sorry. And now it's in Cambridge and I'm not, so I will post it in the new year!

*hugs*, and apologies for faffiness.

No apologies needed, and thank you very much.

On the subject of packages, there is going to be one sent to you soon, which will include your copy of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay among other things. [ advance warning because few things feel odder than thinking one has a big present from someone and finding it mostly or entirely composed of returned loans, IME. ]

Does that mean you have an actual .mac/AOL iChat account, then? Or just rendezvous?

Glad you're enjoying your Mac-enabled christmas, anyway. We shall have to organise speedometer cable fettling in the new year. :)

[identity profile] brrm.livejournal.com 2004-12-23 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
D'oh, complete failure to use christmas-enabled userpic there.

Just rendezvous -- how does one get a .mac account? Is money involved, or just effort?

It would be cool if you'd be happy to come and play with [livejournal.com profile] pto452 some time -- let me know when you're likely to be in Cambridge and we'll try to arrange something...

[identity profile] brrm.livejournal.com 2004-12-23 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
You can only get a 30-day .mac trial account, anything else and money is involved - it used to be worth it, but you can now get an AIM account instead, and just connect iChat to that. Get an iSight too, YKYWT ;)
(Well, actually it works with ordinary webcams too with some hack or other)

I shall certainly get in touch when next in Cambridge - and bring my big... torch to find where the other end of the speedo cable goes. :)

Because I didn't want you to miss it and don't think you read my journal - has anyone pointed you here (http://www.samsungexplore.com/playing/games_arcade/AdventCalendar/day24.html) yet? :)

Have a good one.

That sounds like a real ChristmasTM, as if it were in The Box of Delights, or one of Susan Cooper's works. The kind of warm, cosy, knitted Christmas that most of us disbelieve when we read about them. I'm glad that they do happen somewhere!

At last, someone writes about liking a family Christmas! And I really enjoyed reading it. Hoorah.
