Ticked off

Every time I put an audio CD in my PC's CD drive, I get the following message:



It has taken me several months of annoyance -- firmly selecting the sensible option and ticking the "Always do the selected action" tickybox, and then next time being irritated all over again by the reappearance of the message -- to come to the conclusion that what it means when it says "Windows can perform the same action every time..." is that it can display this dialog box every time, regardless of whether or not I have ticked the tickybox.

Fairly typical. I use a program called Flip to convert .wma to .mp3 for which a Micro$oft plug in is required. Every single file it tells me that I need to install the plug in.

This irritates me too - they obviously have the right idea, but they haven't implemented it at all well (similarly, I have a huge external USB disk with all sorts of (legit) media files on it - when I plug it in, Windows tries to search the entire disk to see what sort of action to recommend). The procedure described here (http://www.windowsnetworking.com/kbase/WindowsTips/WindowsXP/UserTips/Customization/DisableCDautoplayinWindowsXPPro.html) will stop autorun completely, but you need to have admin rights on the PC.

Try right clicking on the drive in "my computer" without a disk in it, and selecting properties. Then changing what it says under the "Autoplay" tab (making sure you select the content type to be "Music CD". This may work, but since it, in theory, is doing the same as the box above, it probably won't.

Worth a try though.

I think *something* like that must work because I seem to have finally managed to stop it asking me the same thing every time too. Obviously I can't remember exactly what I did though.

Ah, I don't see that.

Mostly because pretty much the first thing I'll do is turn off auto-run. (You think I trust Sony as far as I could throw them? Or any other member of the IFPI or its affiliates?)

If that's your work box, it's almost certainly becuase they don't let you save that value to your registry/profile.

Curse them roundly and demand a real OS. ;-)

I always assumed it would stop doing that when I started putting the same CDs in again. Because, you know, I might want to play this album, but who knows about the next? :)
