Lost

I've lost an earring. It's like this one, only lost.

They were probably my all-time favourite pair of earrings; purple (always good), made out of that paint-on latex stuff (really light, didn't lacerate my neck by bashing against it in windy weather), neat zig-zags that could look indie-ish when necessary but also quite plain and smart when worn with normal clothes. And they only cost a fiver. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the place I bought them from: it was a stall at Erotica two years ago, but apart from the earrings I can't remember if they were selling latex stuff or silly spiky jewellery or both or what. If anybody can tell me where I can buy a replacement, I'll be enormously grateful. I know there are millions of goth/fetish (punk emo alternative lolita gay rockabilly DIY BNWT L@@K!) shops that do things like this, but I've been looking around the web for ages and can't find another pair of these anywhere.

And the only reason I was in town and trying on clothes (which I think is how the earring got pulled out and lost) in the first place was that I was trying to find a smart dress for the black-tie dinner at the conference next week that I don't want to go to, which meant wasting another whole chunk of time when I should have been writing the presentation for the interview for the job which is currently the only sensible escape route I can see but which I'm increasingly convinced I stand absolutely no chance of getting, and now I not only feel too stupid to get a good job but also fat and unattractive and all the wrong shape for grown-up clothes and it's probably partly hormones (which would also explain the pre-conference outbreak of spots) but I just want to hide under a rock and cry.

Have two largely content-free *hugs*, one for each copy of this post :-)

I get pre-conference stress, too, but generally think they're good once I'm at them.

each copy

Hrm. Not sure what happened there, but I've deleted the surplus one. Thanks for telling me. And for the hugs.

generally think they're good once I'm at them.

Ah, I'm there as one of the organisers rather than as a delegate -- it's not a conference I'd go to for myself. There will be some interesting bits (though I can't guarantee that I'll be able to go to any of them), and there will at least (hopefully) be nice food and plentiful booze that I won't have to pay for ;-) ... but there'll also be a lot of tedium, lots of dull people in suits, and lots of being expected to stay up being professional-but-sociable until the small hours of the morning.

There will also be lots of questions (from dull people in suits) about the new website (the demo of which is nowhere near finished) from people who don't really know what they want/expect from a new website, but will expect it to be Exciting in some way, & I will have to try to find ways to pretend it's exciting, or at least pretend it's not just as much of a crock of shit as the existing website.

</rant> (sorry)

Clothes shopping can be evil that way.

I hope you find your earring, or something like it.

:( Much sympathy on the earring. And on the other issue too.

I re-located a bunch of size 14-18 evening dresses this week which was a big shock, I'd completely forgotten that I owned most of them. That excitement was tempered by the realisation that I still won't be able to get into most of them - but then I have almost nowhere to wear them, either. Ho hum.

Actually, looking at the earring, I'd be willing to have a go at making a pair if someone will buy me a small pot of purple liquid latex...

[identity profile] ewtikins.livejournal.com 2007-03-24 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Alternately, these on etsy (http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=541012) might be acceptable substitutes - I'm sure you could contact the maker and ask for purple ones.

[identity profile] j4.livejournal.com 2007-03-24 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, wow -- I'd never looked at Etsy before. That's sweet. The design and the content and the concept and the whole damn thing. Why have I only just heard of this?!

[identity profile] j4.livejournal.com 2007-03-24 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, just after posting (having got all the whinging off my chest...) I wondered if buying liquid latex & making earrings with it might be easier than trailing round Camden looking for someone who sells them... So I have bought some from this rather dubious-looking internet shop (http://www.novelty-gifts-heaven.com/) because they're the only one I could find in the UK that sold purple liquid latex. Most places seem to be assuming that the colour isn't important because you're going to be more interested in the B00B135!!! that you're painting it onto...

So I think I will have a go at making some, but if it all looks too complicated for a badger of very little brain, then I could send the stuff on to you... is that okay? :)

Also (seeing yr other comment) I had forgotten about Fimo! I think I have some somewhere. Lots of exciting craft ideas for when I emerge from the other side of all the work-related doom. Thank you! :)

[identity profile] ewtikins.livejournal.com 2007-03-24 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be happy to have a try if your efforts don't work out.

:)

I think a lot of people who work with latex for crafts buy the white stuff and mix the colour in themselves as it's cheaper and needs less storage. But, hey, I like purple.

Hrmph. Hugs, that badger?

Sod the dress; go in a suit-and-tie. 'swhat I'm planning to do as and when I am required to attend such an event. :p

Hugs back at you. Sorry for being so scratchy at the moment.

I did consider wearing DJ-and-bow-tie-etc instead. But a) my boss would think I was weird* and either Wouldn't Get It or would make offensive jokes about teh ghey and think it was hilariously funny**, and b) it wouldn't really be the sort of professional image I'm supposed to be projecting yada yada yada***, and c) I don't actually know where my tux is and I think I might have given it to my sister. :-}

* I mean, she'd be right, but she doesn't really do weird.
** and maybe that means I should challenge her assumptions more actively, and I do try to when I can in normal conversation etc, but at the moment I'm more in the "hide under a rock" frame of mind
*** especially when I'll be probably the youngest person there & thus am trying to pretend to be a Normal Grown-up, I think I could probably get away with a bit more eccentricity if I didn't already feel like people saw me as still student-aged.

Mneh, sorry for rambling on. *hugs*

[identity profile] kaberett.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Pfft. Rambling fine. Likewise hugs. Being scratchy is understandable; I've been similarly so, but have been choosing to make bitchy posts. :p

(I keep meaning to respond to comments in my LJ and not getting around to it, btw, but insofar as I was "depressed"[1], I was over it by the beginning of March, and the "drugs" was a bad, bad experiment with seeing if I get on the Pil any better now, and the answer is no, no I *don't*...)

'rah for considering it, at any rate! - though yes, the reasons for not all make sense, alas, and it's completely understandable that you're not feeling up to overt reeducation policies.

Me, I'm busy trying to gently persuade my mother that really, buying me a Nice Suit for university interviews won't be the Worst Thing in the World...

[1] As ever, no official diagnosis, but the growing obsession with Sharp Things and the massive reluctance to drag myself out of bed and the lack of caring about anything were clues that something was amiss.

Go on, do the DJ-and-Tie. It looks pretty damn' good in a well-tailored dinner jacket. But it's not all that unusual.

Hey.. there, there. I'm - allegedly - not far off 10 stone. But I'm only 5'2 on tip-toes and owing to various factors, such as sheer lack of exercise, I had to buy a dress for the Brother Outlaw's upcoming wedding party which is in fact a size 16.

You're intelligent and personable and you can get through anything for a few days. If you were condemned to the hell of knowing that you would endlessly have to repeat the conference experience, OK, but this is just for a while.

At least you don't organise and run conferences for a living. :-D

You are not too stupid to get a good job. They are very hard to find. This is notto do with you in the least, it's to do with the paucity of interesting jobs, and none are flawless.

(I am minded of my chum the headhunter; yeah, good money, but OTOH she found herself stranded in Wichita, Kansas, with less than 24 hours to go to get to her dad's 60th birthday party - in Worcestershire - on the phone in the ticketing queue, talking to her husband explaining which knickers were in which drawer and which bras they went with, so he could pack for her, and all because the travel agent hadn't remembered to BOOK the return flight from Kansas to Chicago which would have allowed her to get back to London in time. She worked 65 - 70 hours a week for two years until in March she announced she couldn't go on, and "racked back" to 45 hours/week. So much for glamourous, well-paid jobs.)

You have a life with a lovely gentleman, and plenty of future ahead. S'OK. Listen to Badger, he does know everything.

Maybe Extreme Metal body jewelry have them (alternatively may be able to get them). I know they do a lot of latex-based jewelry and if you fancy name-pulling, tell them I sent you (I used to work with the husband of the owner).
