Who's gonna drive you home

Drove into work this morning, and found I was actually more nervous about it than I was before passing my test! Partly because I hadn't driven Sion's car for months, and it all felt weird and different and awkward; but also partly because I felt like there was more pressure (self-imposed, mostly) to get everything right now that the L-plates are off -- despite the fact that I know I'm no better at driving than I was just before I passed, if you see what I mean.

So, er, thanks to Sion for putting up with a very ragged drive. I suspect I'm not going to be driving home for Christmas after all. (The Chris Rea earworm I've given myself now is punishment enough, though.)

Is that Chris Rea or The Cars? (Or the Paradise Motel, for that matter?)

It was the phrase "driving home for Christmas (http://www.yimpan.com/Songsite/Lyric/index.asp?sid=4808)" which gave me the Chris Rea earworm. The Cars' "Drive", despite providing me with a good subject line, isn't nearly catchy enough to displace it.

Tracy Chapman, "Fast car" (iirc)

The Primitives' 'Crash' (oosp)

My top n, in no particular order:

  • Tracy Chapman, "Fast Car"

  • The Beatles, "Baby you can drive my car"

  • Suede, "Breakdown"[1]

  • ZZ Top, "Arrested for driving while blind"

  • Gary Numan, "Cars"

  • Joy Rider, "Rush Hour"

  • Roxette, "Sleeping in my Car"

  • REM, "Drive" (um, this probably doesn't really count)

[1] Okay, so it isn't really about that kind of breakdown (in so far as anything's "about" anything[2], says the postmodernist), but it does have the line "Does your love only come in a Volvo" in it, and it's one of my favourite Suede songs, despite that line. If you really object, I'll go for "The Asphalt World", "She's not dead" (which talks about sex in cars), or "Daddy's Speeding".

You're the second person to mention BBR to me this week. I'm starting to feel like I should go out and buy one of their albums. Er, if there are more than one. Which would you recommend? The only track of theirs I've heard is "Child Psychology" (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] addedentry) but I did like it, and I used to like the Auteurs so other stuff involving Luke Haines is probably a safe bet.

BBR have two albums: England Made Me and The Facts Of Life. The latter is dangerously samey and shows worrying signs of descent into self-parody, so try the bleaker first album, though there's little to choose between them musically. (There is also a B-sides comp called The Worst Of which is overstating things a little.)

On other mix tapes I have followed 'The Art Of Driving' with Squarepusher's 'My Red Hot Car':

I want to fuck you with my red hot car

Alice Donut - New Jersey Turnpike
Pixies - Motorway to Roswell (do spaceships count?)

My brain has freeze, and I cannot think of anymore.

Hmmm....

  1. Offspring - Bad Habit
  2. Madness - Driving In My Car

And those are all I can think of at the moment.

Thanks for reminding me -- Offspring, "No Brakes".

Haven't listened to "Americana" for ages. I really should get round to buying it on CD.

I could (in theory --- kit currently untested...) burn you a copy if you like...
