Shades of blue

My Friends page has gone strange. The background is all blue, with black text; usernames are black text on white background; headers and sidebar aren't appearing at all; and the last post I can see is one from [livejournal.com profile] bibliogirl at 2:09pm.

Anybody else getting this?

Update: Oh, now, this is silly. See, I read LJ in a very small browser window, so it doesn't look too obviously not-work all over my screen; consequently I've been glancing back at my Friends page and seeing that it's still all blue... and not scrolling down. What a fucking dodo I am.

Anyway, If I scroll down, I find that I can see the other posts, but [livejournal.com profile] bibliogirl's post about cinema tickets still appears at the top of the page on blue background before the start of the page as I'd expect it to appear. If you see what I mean. Which is irritating (no offence meant, [livejournal.com profile] bibliogirl!) but not so broken I can't read it.

Now to catch up with all the stuff I could have been reading all morning. Duhhhh.

Nope; all looks fine on my friends page.

Yup, and on [livejournal.com profile] j4's friend page, too.

Yeah, it looks fine to me if I log out and look at it; problem is then a) I don't get the filtered friends list, and b) I don't get to see friends-only posts.

Wondering if it's worth emailing LJ support.

It could be how your site options are set up... have a look at the Site options (http://www.livejournal.com/manage/siteopts.bml) when logged in and see if changing the scheme helps.

Doesn't seem to make any difference. :-(

Bugger. What does the HTML look like ?

[identity profile] j4.livejournal.com 2003-12-04 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
If I view source I can read all the posts that I can't see on the actual page, and [livejournal.com profile] bibliogirl's post is the last post in the page's source.

Is there anything in particular you're thinking of that I could look for in the source? (If you just want to look at the HTML in more detail I can try to stick it somewhere that you can see it.)

[identity profile] simonb.livejournal.com 2003-12-04 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
How odd; you could try running it past the W3C Validation service (http://validator.w3.org/) and see what it says. It could be someone has posted some broken HTML in on of their entries.

Which browser are you using ? It could also be a browser bug which is being tickled.

I'm guessing that the last post appearing on the rendered page is also the one appearing just before [livejournal.com profile] bibliogirl's post in the HTML source - in which case it's almost certainly that one which contains the error. Look for mismatched <td> and </td> tags.

On the other hand, if it was the last one in the source an hour ago then the erroneous entry may well have been pushed off the end of your friends page by now and it will all have returned to sanity.

I had exactly the same thing last night but it seems to be fixed for me now. Hmmm.

[identity profile] j4.livejournal.com 2003-12-04 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Hm, maybe it will go away of its own accord then... here's hoping.

[identity profile] imc.livejournal.com 2003-12-04 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
My background is blue anyway (light blue though), with black text, and usernames on a white background. But it seems to be working, as I can see this post.

Hmm. Try clearing cookies and starting again, perhaps?

I know I could set my friends page to those colours (though I don't know why anybody would choose black on blue!), but a) I didn't, and b) I suspect that wouldn't also remove the headers and the sidebar (I don't have any of the links to recent entries, previous 25 posts, etc.).

Anyway, I've tried clearing all cookies and clearing the cache, but that hasn't made any difference either. :-/

I'm a bit concerned since I _do_ use black on blue (pale blue... it's easy to read). Let me check that last post and make sure it didn't have any HTML in it which might have broken stuff.

[identity profile] bibliogirl.livejournal.com 2003-12-04 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
No... not me, guv'nor...

[identity profile] imc.livejournal.com 2003-12-04 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
It's not another of these things where someone posts a broken <table> in their journal and thus buggers up everyone else's friends page, is it?

As [livejournal.com profile] simonb says, a look at the HTML source might provide a modicum of enlightenment.

[identity profile] kaet.livejournal.com 2003-12-04 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Before I decided lj was too broken for work, I had a good furtle around inside.

The style you describe is the default style and style number zero, or null, or somesuch, and if ever you bugger something up with the layout code, that's what happens to the layout.

[identity profile] j4.livejournal.com 2003-12-04 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
The style you describe is the default style

What, with all the links (recent entries, previous 25 entries, etc.) missing? Are you sure?

and if ever you bugger something up with the layout code, that's what happens to the layout.

But, but, I haven't touched the layout code! I wouldn't even know where to find it! :-(

[identity profile] kaet.livejournal.com 2003-12-04 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, it's a broken version of the default style, :).

But, but, I haven't touched the layout code!

No, but they might have done, :(.
