I refuse to answer this poll on the ideological grounds that I'm a radiobuttons man.

Go to the pub and practise karate while decorating a cake.

Company is good, usually. But so is having a clean room. And books are also very fine things to spend time with. Being fit is, of course, desirable, too. And music, yes.

That's a possibility, though I think I'd shift cake-decorating to the beginning, otherwise I'll run out of time and/or get too distracted by cake-decoration to make it to the pub before closing time.

Actually, the current plan is: decorate cake, drink gin, drink more gin, cry, drink more gin, fall over.

- Company's not an option.
- Not bothered about a clean room, but being able to find the floor without resorting to geophysics would be handy.
- Books are good, yes. I have my books and my poetry to protect me.
- I'm already fit, but I could do with practising technique.
- And music, yes, if I can think of anything to listen to that doesn't have any emotional associations for me whatsoever, which kinda limits it.

Hmmm. There's a list-making question (High Fidelity stylee) to distract my mind for the rest of the afternoon: 10 albums I own which have no strong emotional associations for me. I'm not sure I can do it.

No, see, I don't want to do poi, because at the moment I REALLY DON'T ENJOY IT. I don't find it fun practising and practising something when there's simply no visible improvement. I think I've hit a point where I need to work smarter rather than harder, and I don't know how, and it's unbelievably frustrating.

At least if I practice piano, over the course of an hour or two I'll see a difference in how well I'm playing whatever it is I'm practising. The improvement might not last if I don't play again for a while, but it's nice to get somewhere, sometimes. Shit, I get nowhere with the rest of my life, the least I can do is try to feel some kind of sense of purpose or achievement in the pointless middle-class self-improvement hobbies that I pursue.

OK. For me, I find that I am improving (at least with devilstick, to be honest, I'm not sure about poi either).

There's an idea for a poll in that last sentence.

I never did get a _proper_ cake for my 50th birthday....
How much for a rich moist very chocolatey chocolate cake iced to look like a green baize poker table with cards and chips on?

Oo, that sounds like a fun design to do. If I knew what a poker table looked like, I mean. But it sounds like a plausible thing to do on a cake. Being flattish, kind of thing. As for 'how much', I couldn't charge you for making you a birthday cake!

A poker table is whatever table they happen to have where you go to play (eg at Chris's it's his kitchen table), with something thrown over it, preferably green baize.
The "proper" ones the casino uses for tournaments are just big circles of chipboard with green baize over.
In fancy places, they're slightly kidney shaped so the house dealer gets to reach eevrybody else more easily.
I'll see if I can find a webpage.
And since it wouldn't strictly be for my birthday as it'd be months late, OF COURSE I'd give you /something/ in return.

Put the poi down; step away, slowly.

Do some PROPER juggling.
