... more things for eBay. Knives, this time. But I could do with more information on them than I actually have.

Have a look at the pictures (link goes to directory listing but it'll be obvious which pictures are of the knives!) -- does anybody have a clue (or think they might have a clue if they could see them closer-up) whether this is a particular style of carving, a particular age of knife, any idea what the wood is likely to be? Is there a word for this kind of matched pair of knives with one smaller than the other? I know nothing about them, I just bought them at a jumble sale because they were pretty.

If not, don't worry, I will just use lots of words like "decorative" and "interesting" and "unusual" and "antique". :-)

There's an itching thought at the back of my brain about the legality of selling knives over certain lengths. Although that may just be to do with transporting said knives into this country; I certainly had a sword stick confiscated at Heathrow, once.

I've seen something like that before, but I can't remember the description, which is totally unhelpful to you. Nice knives though. you might want to check out the rules about posting knives. I think you can - well certainly you could a few years back (as I did) with a mandatory packing restriction.

Sword canes are explicitly mentioned as a banned weapon, along with things like throwing stars. I think, although I'm not 100% sure, that you're not even allowed to own them in the UK.

You're allowed to sell knives of any length ("It's a kitchen knife, officer", "It's for my carpentry"...), you're just not allowed to carry a blade over three inches long unless you have a specific reason to, for instance, if you've just bought it and are carrying it home.

AIUI there was an amnesty on throwing knives et al many years ago, so yes, I think you're right about that.
