My little sister got funding to do a PhD!! They've been keeping her guessing for months, the bastards, but in the end it was worth the wait.

In a way it's kind of ironic really, though. All the way through school she seemed to feel bitterly overshadowed by me intellectually -- not helped by idiot teachers who said things like "why can't you be more like your sister?" -- and now it's her who's forging ahead through academia, while I'm happy to remain Jill of all trades and mistress of none. No, really, that's not veiled jealousy; I genuinely do enjoy my lazy dilettanteism, and I know now that I would have gone stark staring mad doing a DPhil. Lorna's more focused than me, though, and I say good luck to her.

I'm so happy for her, and so, so proud of her. And no, I never tell her this because it would embarrass her; but I kind of think she knows anyway... but doesn't say because it would embarrass me. :-)

You're presumably now hoping she doesn't read your LJ? :-)

Nah, I don't mind, I know she has glanced at it occasionally, but saying-something-on-LJ-and-having-it-read is not the same thing as saying-something-out-loud-face-to-face.

Thank you, it does look v cool. In fact I may have to buy her the book...

Somehow this sounds entirely familiar. ;) Yay for her, and I suggest you not point her at my sister's blog any time soon...

You're both secretly 1950's men?

Excellent; my congratulations, if you can find an apt context in which to pass them on.
