When I was a fresher I didn't have a TV and I didn't read the Cambridge Evening News.
The CEN is available on the web (http://w3.cambridge-news.co.uk/), and I'd be surprised if your college had no computer room. Also, it's barely possible to walk around the town centre without seeing the advertising boards for the local papers, which usually display the main headline.
Also, you're not a fresher any more.
The university can be a bit of a bubble - lots of people aren't aware of *anything*
It amazes me that these people never even get curious about the glimpses of outside world that they see when walking from mummy and daddy's BMW to their college room.
