I am not sure how much is done by individuals. The job before this one I was exposed to some research as a sidejar of my work on how ease of learning varies between students, basically visual, listening, and reading.
It caught my attention because I spent most of my time from ten to seventeen with many friends, and my initial learning is still easier with text, which is not to disagree with "the doing" just that I'll start by reading. According to at least that study it put me in the 10% minority at the time (late eighties.)
The other stray thought that your post reminded me of was that I had come across soem work by Steven Pinker a few years back on socialization. If I am rememebering his writing correctly (not reall a given btw,) he placed peer-to-peer as the slightly stronger influence over either genetics or other environmental (family.)
The reason that caught my attention is because during the main time in question, again, what I remember are mostly books. Streams of them rather than individual, mostly, although I have a few of those too. So, maybe I am romanticizing, either the books or the relative isolation; but I do consider that my main influences came via reading and not family or friends or teachers.
Thanks for the post. I came in via livredor this time but had read your journal a few times, probably via rysmiel.
