I use headphones as a virtual door -- let the guy ask the question while I continue to type distractedly (for extra points, type accurately and fast while looking at them -- it freaks people out), then take the headphones out, and say "Sorry, can you repeat that, please?"
(I'm usually a helpful kind of person. But I have off-days. :-> )
