addedentry has already given you the maths answer 8-) but I think the reasons I think of it as being closer are a) you get there by the towpath, which always feels more like a stroll than a getting-somewhere, if you see what I mean, and b) the Magdalen has been closed for a lot of the time while we've been getting to know the area. However the Magdalen has now reopened -- it's a bit shiny for my taste, not really a beer kind of pub, but nice cocktails and cake. :-) And the food looks quite good though we haven't tried it yet. Big contrast to the Isis but there's room in Oxford for all sorts of types of pub!
I probably should add some of this stuff to the OpenGuide. 8-)
