I'd be interested to read the thing about communes if you do happen to find it. (Not ignoring the rest of the comment, but started replying & it ended up as a waaaaaay-too-long braindumpy comment which I will try to turn into a proper post at some point, rather than just throwing it all at you... if that makes sense.)
