I read Daniel Kahneman's Thinking Fast Thinking Slow recently and one of the things he talks about is how your 'System 2 Thinking' is essentially single-threaded (though he obviously doesn't describe it as such!) which was a bit of an eye opener for me, and explained why when sometimes say I'm at particular points of cooking dinner, certain types of questions from the boys frazzle me as they are both types of System 2 thinking.
Also one of the strange types of meditation I do involves 'welcoming' opposites of sensations, emotion, belief or whatever at the same time, so you're kind of doing this weird split brain thing. It's quite weirdly effective (you alternate back and forth first between for example opposite emotions and then welcome both at the same time).
