Know just what you mean about birthdays. There's something very easy you can do which will make you several times better at remembering your LJ Friends' birthdays, though; instead of using the usual update.bml page (http://www.livejournal.com/update.bml?mode=full) to post your LJ entries, use the portal (http://www.livejournal.com/portal/) instead. This contains a little box with upcoming birthdays of your Friends - or at least those who have made their birthdays public. It's a partial solution, admittedly, but a darn good one as far as it goes.
Fingers: not long after I've cut my nails, I fairly frequently get hangnails at the sides of my fingers and chew the loose skin off there. That's not the same thing as chewing the sides of your fingers, is it?
