The wrong trousers

Holy crap. From ucam.adverts.forsale:

Pair of beautiful Armani Jeans, bought in Canada 2 weeks ago for $400
(approx £180). Dark, almost shiny blue denim, with true hemp lining. Low
rise, with lowish crotch. Price in Uk about £225.

The story is that I bought them while on a random shopping trip, then got
home and realised I have too many jeans as it is... so I probably wont be
wearing them. Its a pity to see such great jeans sit the season out in my
closet, so I'll consider any offer!

Size 34 waist although I am a 32.. Basically if you are interested and you
are anywhere between 32-34, give them a try. Have actually only been worn
once... for about an hour. You are welcome to try them on if you are
interested.

Now, okay, I own far too many clothes and spend more money than I should on them, but I simply can't imagine having the kind of lifestyle where I could cheerfully spend a hundred and eighty pounds on something -- anything, let alone a pair of jeans -- and then be happy to sell it at a loss after an hour. I also can't imagine not realising that I already own enough pairs of Armani jeans, but that's another matter; for me the zero pairs I already own are quite enough.

Am I being naïve to believe this chap's story? I mean, is this actually just a complicated way of reselling off-the-back-of-a-lorry merchandise at a profit, like the way some folk on u.a.fs routinely sell duty-free cigarettes on behalf of spurious friends who only realised after buying a gazillion Gauloises that they wanted to give up?

I'm not sure. It seems funny just one. These dodgy geezers tend to have "accidentally" bought quite a lot of a thing. I think it's just other world land. Perhaps I'm still boggled by walking down Sloane Street the other day, which makes you realise how posh posh-frocks can get. And all those extremely expensive pastel-shade wellies, too (apparently the in thing).

I dunno; I routinely pay £40 for Levis, because I find they actually last so much longer without fading or falling apart that they work out as better value for money than cheaper brands. Also they fit.

That said, for £180 I'd want them to be bulletproof, self-cleaning and have built-in levitators...

Ditto, I've paid ~£40 in the past for Levis and been very happy with them. I also paid £40-but-with-20%-off-so-really-£32 for some John Rocha ones recently, which fit beautifully and had I the money on a regular basis I'd be converted.

It's a matter of taste; I used to buy Levis; nowadays, I buy cheap trousers: current black jeans were 20 quid for 2 from Mackays (a Paisley-based "value" clothing chain), and the other troursers are 3 pairs of black combats that cost £12 quid each, off the interweb.

LOL @ "all posh" (although did you know my dad's heir to an Italian title? Shame that a) they got rid of the whole thing more than 60 years ago, b) the land and stuff has long-since been sold and c) "Barone" sounds very silly to anyone who ever watched Dangermouse)

But I think it's a well-kept secret that they exist outside Scotland, you know. imc's aunt gave smallclanger a very lovely duffle coat last winter but was surprised when I said "oooh, Mackays". She thought they didn't exist down here at all. And I know most Tabs don't know there's one in Haverhill, thanks to an online conversation which ended up with the mental image of lnr wearing colanders for a bra...

Combats (BDU trousers) are vastly superior to jeans - pockets everywhere, comfy and best of all they stay black. Mind you, I got several with dodgy zips that broke straight away. No complaints about the button fly ones though!

Like I said, I wouldn't bother buying them new. If I wanted to buy a pair of jeans I'd just trawl through the numerous charity shops on Burleigh Street.

For you, the best bet is probably the main street in Headington; at least, there used to be lots of charity shops there. Mind you it's 5 years or so since I was there.

They're still there although they've mostly poshed up a bit. I was surprised (but not unhappy) to be asked to pay £4 per hardback in one of them recently.

The last few pairs of jeans I've bought have all come from charity shops. And the two I wear most often are ex-Keith because he lost weight and it seemed a shame to waste Next jeans in good condition that fit me.
