... as I realise that all I am is a big ugly stack of tatty books and shoes that's blocking the view of the TV.

I just want to live somewhere that I can actually be alive without getting in anybody's way.

A pox on this TV-viewing killjoy!

You must find yourself alternative housemates who appreciate the finer things in life (such as footwear) to replace this slavish devotee of the idiot lantern.

We have no TV here...we just all sit and stare at our respective monotors instead. Woo.

Hey, no poxes on people you don't even know. He's a nice housemate, and he definitely appreciates footwear (though perhaps not in quite the quantity that I have).

It's just that I just often feel like I'm in his way. Usually because I am. :-/ I live a different sort of life from him, that's all; I'm messy and impulsive and disorganised and generally quite diffuse, he's neat and tidy and quiet and self-contained.

Sigh.

Sorry... I just visualised you coming home all bouncy and having your mood deflated by being treated as an unwelcome object blocking the view of the telly. :|

I used to feel very messy and disorganised when living with tidy people - now I live with even messier people and feel relatively virtuous. ;)

is not the same as the things you possess.

You have made some huge and very positive - and difficult - changes in the last six months: SO much done! And done really, really well.

And if your housemate [bows in that direction] really wanted you to get your self and your shoes and your tatty books and your kit and your caboodle out of the way, you would doubtless negotiate such a thing.

But I doubt that he thinks you are the same as your Imelda Marcos/Zsa-Zsa Gabor Memorial Collection of Shoes. :-)

not the same as the things you possess

"I am not my house or my car or my songs / They are only just stops along my way" (http://www.lyricsfreak.com/p/paula-cole/106199.html)

On the other hand, my things are an extension of me, in a way; they're the things I choose to acquire and keep, the things that echo me and project my self to the world. It's not really the things that are the problem, it's the attitudes; but it's the things that take up the space, it's the things that get tripped over.

In which case I appear to be a large collection of footwear, books, gaming paraphernalia, and many many CDs. Oh, and several too many coats and jackets. [hugs] We all have "in the way" feelings (even when living on my own!), but that doesn't make them any easier to handle.

You may ask yourself
How do I work this?
You may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
You may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
You may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!

You may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
You may ask yourself
Where does that highway GO to?
You may ask yourself
Am I right?...Am I wrong?
You may say to yourself
MY GOD!...WHAT HAVE I DONE?

SAME AS IT EVER WAS
ONCE IN A LIFE TIME
LET THE WATER HOLD ME DOWN
LETTING THE DAYS GO BY

I & 'II just tripped over our own attitudes about our things. (We also trip over the things, themselves, but this time the ruddy socket set really was where he put it, and he even looked straight at it and didn't see it, whilst uttering loudly You MUST have MOVED it, I put it HERE! gesturing at a box which I know contains Child's babygym-type electronic piano thingy.)

Tell you what: you drop by and trash-or-treasure some of mine, I'll come over and trash-or-treasure some of yours, it's always easier when it's someone else's Stuff. Seriously.
