I keep getting these emails that look like I'm being copied in on some kind of pointless top-posted conversation between a bunch of airhead girls. They're not telling me about pictures of their breasts on the web, or offering me fake Rolexes, so I'm not sure what the purpose of it as spam would be, except possibly to get me to reply & prove I'm a real email address. If it is spam, it's very convincingly written to sound like real email. On the other hand, if it's not spam, I should probably tell these nonces that they're cc'ing university staff in on their tedious social arrangements. (I wonder if they've mixed my crsid up with that of "the elusive johanna"?) Or maybe I should just turn up and join them?

Cool. We get in around 1:30 and we need to check in at our hostel in
Bayswater (between the Bayswater and Queensway tube stops) by about 2.
After that, I'd guess we'd either wander/shop or go to a museum
(Joannah, your thoughts?) So let's just say that we'll meet you both
at street level of the Picadilly tube stop (are there two across the
street from each other or no?) at 6:15. Sound good? Sweet.

Yay! Looking forward to it!!
Alex

See what you mean; it looks entirely believable except for being sent to the wrong person, and these days that may be becoming the only way to get spam through increasingly intelligent filters.

Do you still have the headers? I'd guess those would provide a better indication than the body text.

Sorry, yes, headers would have been useful, wouldn't they... Now, where does Outlook hide its "Internet headers"?

Ah yes:

Any help?

It looks legit to me. You are "jm508" and by the power of Google I notice that Joannah Metz is "jm507". So there we have it.

From: [identity profile] j4.livejournal.com
Dude! You are now officially googler of the week. :-)

I'm now kinda having moral issues. I mean, I really should pass this on to Joannah, so she can actually meet up with her mates. But that would spoil the fun of turning up and baffling them at the station...

Date: 2004-11-18 02:47 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pseudomonas.livejournal.com
Send it to Joannah sans headers on paper? This will maintain your anonymity for future exploitation and provide bafflement.

Date: 2004-11-18 02:49 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] j4.livejournal.com
Good plan! If I send it now by UMS it might even get there in time.

From: [identity profile] imc.livejournal.com
Actually I'm of the opinion that doing something like that will forewarn them that People Know and might make them suspicious.

Date: 2004-11-18 03:25 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pseudomonas.livejournal.com
Inevitably, but it'd be unkind to let this Joannah miss out.
I suggest in the poll above the refinement of censoring various non-essential phrases within the email with black marker, and rubber-stamping it. This will baffle further whilst insinuating a more sinister reason for its hitherto non-arrival.

Date: 2004-11-18 03:06 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] imc.livejournal.com
Some mail clients support "bouncing" the mail - that is, forwarding it so that the recipient can't tell you ever had it unless they pay close attention to the headers. Whether they give you the facilities to use mutt at work is another question, of course.

Date: 2004-11-18 03:10 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pseudomonas.livejournal.com
Pine allows it if you enable it in the config screen.

Date: 2004-11-18 03:20 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bjh21.livejournal.com
Be aware that Pine's "bounce" command adds (amongst others) a Resent-From header identifying who bounced it. Even if it didn't, the Received headers would probably give you away.

I suspect its her room number. Looking at churchill's website it has

If you live in College-owned accommodation the correct postal address is:

Name - Room no
Churchill College
Cambridge
CB3 ODS

And the staircases start with numbers - if you look at were the trunk
rooms or laundry areas are for example.

Personally I thought all Cambridge colleges allowed just Name, College
for mail?

The problem with the Pigeon Post option is that these lusers might spend the rest of their lives believing that Cambridge has some mediaeval scribe-of-ye-emails who spends all day delivering longhand hardcopy to their pigeonholes.
