during my time as a student I saw very little direct evidence of it.
Same here, thankfully; but there was certainly Bad Stuff going on -- I didn't buy the local paper (we got the freebies when we were living out, though) but saw quite enough evidence of Bad Stuff from the posterboards for the "OXfordmailan'times" (as shouted by the man with the pointy beard at Carfax).
