Three things you might not have known about raw garlic:

1. It clears your sinuses IMMEDIATELY.
2. It really scorches a sore throat.
3. It doesn't go as well with hot buttered hot-cross-buns as you might think.

Realisations about cosmetic toothmangling:

1. The way my bloody teeth look at the moment, if I got married I wouldn't want to smile on my own wedding photos.
2. People routinely spend hundreds of pounds on a wedding dress they'll only wear once. I'll wear my teeth every day, at least until they all fall out and I can replace them with POTTERY TEETH.

Why eBay is ace:

I just sold a batch of eight Famous Five hardbacks (three of them first editions) and made £22 of PURE PROFIT.

2. is a very sharp observation indeed. Had I thought about that one I might have braved the dentist before ours (I got married with my extraction gap still there, although apparently it wasn't as visible as I felt it was. But it stopped me smiling in photos for a long time).

Now it's my turn to say that I never noticed you had a gap in your teeth! And all my memories of you at your wedding are of you smiling and laughing.

I never noticed the gap in J's teeth, until she showed it to me by opening her mouth very, very wide, and pointing to the back.

Please don't get cross with me for saying this: I didn't notice you had a snaggle tooth, until you pointed it out. It is much less apparent to other people than it is to you. It doesn't affect your looks at all; it is, simply, part of you. People don't like you less or more because of the tooth.

OTOH, it is quite clear that you would be much happier without it, whatever rationalizations you bring to the issue of whether or not it should matter. From that perspective, it is worth any amount of money to correct the problem.

Could you get an interest free loan from your parents?

I dunno, everybody says "it doesn't affect your looks" but when I see photos of me it's so glaringly obvious that it's practically the only thing I can see. Particularly when people catch me on film when I'm laughing, and, urrhhhh.

That's the point. Now, I had an operation for cross-eyedness when I was a baybee. I can see the scar; to me it's like a grand canyon across the rivers of my mind. Hang on, I mean, it's very obvious. I bet you've never even seen it.

You know that pouty thing that Marilyn Monroe did with her lips? That was because she was embarrassed by people seeing her gums when she smiled. You are in good company, as she had absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about either.

You're a Mistress of PhotoShop; have you ever tried taking a photo of yourself that shows the peg tooth, and fixing it to make it normal length?
And you could try out the teeth whitening gig as well.

Oh, and...

Sorry, I forgot to reply to this bit:

We-ell... in principle, maybe, but in practice I don't have any amount of money. I mean, I barely have any amount of money, not just "I don't have 'any amount of money'", if you see what I mean.

Could you get an interest free loan from your parents?

Um, yeah, possibly, but given that they just paid off my tax bill and gave me some extra towards paying off my debts to [livejournal.com profile] sion_a, and given that I'm already in so much other debt, I don't really want to get any kind of a loan from anybody. I think being in debt-that-I-can't-ever-pay-my-way-out-of is probably a worse thing, on the grand scale of things, than having wonky teeth.

Yeahbut. It's their fault cos they gave you the faulty genetics. Therefore they should pay. It's only right.

I think I've read that bleaching is long-term bad for your teeth. I have no references for this, and prolly read it somewhere on the internet, so my mutterings come with every disclaimer ever applied to anything.

I also find Gleaming White Teeth far more eugh-ish than normally coloured teeth with odd bits. Smiles are not meant to blind people!

That all said, there's a lot of sense in what you're saying, and I know that when I had yellow-brown-ish teeth from post-Bad-Tooth-removal mouthwash a while back I ended up incredibly self-conscious about my smile, and I'm usually very unbothered about appearances.

If you find anywhere that gives useful info on how/why bleaching is long-term bad for teeth, I'd be interested to see it. I will look on the interweb, though.

I don't expect I'll ever have All-American Gleaming White "Miss Colgate" Teeth even if I do the bleachy thing, to be honest. Even the before/after photos on the leafletty thing they gave me didn't make the 'after' teeth look perfect-white, just much-whiter, and I'm guessing they'd show a best-case scenario there. I'd be happy with just the brown lines across the front teeth faded out a bit. (To be honest, I'd probably be content with the colour as it is if it wasn't for the colour-matching problem with the veneer; it just seems silly to get a cap done to match icky-coloured teeth.)

And [livejournal.com profile] addedentry has really white teeth & they're lovely. They look all tiny and white and sharp and designed for munching into crisp green apples. I don't think nice teeth are eugh-ish unless they're scary vacant-smile stepford-wife teeth.

Have you read Poe's "Berenice"? It makes this whole discussion much scarier...

Garlic crushed into (cheap) whisky, on the other hand, sorts sore throats out quite amazingly.

This statement should however be weighed against the fact that I've used this cure precisely once in my life, over two decades ago ...

So it's a cure with a 100% success rate; no long-term ill effects have been seen, 20 years on from the original tests; and it involves GARLIC and WHISKY. What's not to like? :-)
