This is a picnic meme.

There will be an LJ picnic on Jesus Green, Cambridge, UK on Saturday the 11th of June, from around 2pm. We'll meet toward the town end of Jesus Green. Nobody is organising this, it'll just happen. Please turn up, be sensible, bring food and drink, meet new people, have fun.

Copy this invitation into your LJ. Let's make this a picnic to remember.

Sounds fun, but sadly I shall be on the way back from Scotland so won't make it.

Hey, I don't even know if I can make it yet, I'm just passing on the meme. :-)

Yes, and I have no intention of entering zone seven, especially not if one has to be sensible or have this 'fun' of which you speak.

Here comes the fun

I didn't write the invitation, dude! You don't have to be sensible or have fun if you don't want to. Just don't kill anybody.

Unless they're really, really annoying..

And, okay, you can maim them a bit if they're a g-o-t-h.

Nobody is organising this

Well it's got a date, a time and a place so that sounds fairly organised to me. :-)

Somebody, somewhere, picked a date/time/place. That's not really "organising" it IMO, that's just decreeing from on high; since we don't know who set the date or who else has heard the meme by now, we can't easily change it, or argue with it. There's nobody to set rules on who can come and who can't, nobody to insist that you can't invite so-and-so because we're not talking to them, etc.

I'm selling official tickets. I'll be setting up a broken website and a permanently engaged phone line later today.

Well, really a picnic doesn't actually need that much organisation. I'm not sure I count arguing about the timing as organisation — in the end, someone has to decide, and it seems they did.

Oh! This sort of thing makes me so sad I no longer live in Cambridge...

you could come visit?

One person on my post has commented they can't face the trip up from London, and in their case they can't afford it anyway, but it seems strange when Cambridge people pop down to London for things quite often!

Hehe, if only it was that easy! ^^ I'm one £500 plane ticket away at the moment ;_;

Tangentially...

When I lived in Cambridge, I could get to the station in under half an hour - ten minutes if I wanted to pay for a taxi. Then getting to the centre-ish of London, where most of the things I wanted to go to were, would take about 45 minutes to an hour.

Living in generic London, the variable public transport (i.e. good in some places, arse in others) means I can get to central London in about half an hour (assuming I time it right), whereas other people I know in generic London can take a helluva lot longer than that. I think one guy I know reckoned it would take him about 90 minutes to get to Leicester Square by public transport, whereas I can do it in about 30 from work if I time everything exactly right (and already have a ticket). But most of the time, I would never go back to such places because Stuff (tm) would be happening in a pub, a park, a museum, a club or whatever.

Not all cambridge ppl pop down to london all the time.. horses for courses and all that. I don't think it's strange at all.
