House things?

While sorting through the vast drifts of paperwork I found half a Christmas card from a school-friend, saved because it featured her 'new' address. I decided that even though the card was from years ago and she might have moved again since then, this was still the most recent address I had for her, so I should transfer it into my address book.

The postcode was a bit hard to read, so I googled for what I thought it was, and verified that it was indeed correct... and in fact one of the hits, on www.houseprices.co.uk, was for her house-number. Which told me that not only did she no longer live at the address I had, but that she sold her house two years ago for over twice what she originally paid for it.

I may never actually get round to getting in touch with her again anyway, because not even the magic of modern communications technology can make people have something to say to each other, but it's nice to know she's doing okay. :-)

That site is terrifying. I just found out what people paid for the new-built house on the corner.

There are two other houses that have changed hands recently that are not listed, and next door which is in the process of selling (or possibly not - last I heard the buyer had pulled out, but the sign still says SOLD STC).

Well. It is a good thing Keith is prepared to live with babies in the house, really.

Just for info, the Land Registry, from where that data comes, doesn't have to be informed of a sale for 2 years.

Recently I binned an address book that reappeared after a five-year hibernation beneath a wardrobe: everybody I had known from school and University.

It might shock you to think that I'd cut off the past in this way.

It was saddening to think that of them had contacted me in over a decade: what's the point of keeping even out-of-date addresses for them?

Not really -- there's no moral obligation to stay friends with the people you knew at school or university. People change and grow apart, and while bonding over being lousy at hockey might be the conversation-opener for a lasting friendship, it's not in itself a very solid foundation when your lives start to diverge.

To be honest, I'd much rather my yeargroup remembered me once in 10 years when flicking through an old yearbook and thought "Oh yeah, I remember her, she was cool/funny/interesting/nice" than that they sent me a dutiful content-free Christmas card every year to which I felt obligated to reply in kind.
