j4This weekend I managed to stick an electric screwdriver in my hand while doing some trivial DIY, cut my wrist on a broken umbrella, and attend a barbecue in the rain. Isn't the Bank Holiday supposed to be next weekend?
The weekend before was K's hen night, and it rained then as well -- huge sploshy drops of rain giving us just enough warning to pack up picnic stuff (cake and champagne and plastic cups) and run away from Port Meadow, but not quite enough time to get within sight of shelter before getting utterly drenched. We squelched into the Duke of Cambridge and drank cocktails until we forgot how soggy we were, and then went on to Raoul's, which was too full to accommodate a large group, so finally ended up in Frevd's, a cocktail bar in an old church. I haven't drunk so many cocktails since the glory days of the Oxford Union Cellar Bar Happy Hour; three-shot cocktails for £1.50, jumpers for goalposts, and you still got change from a five-bob note. Those were the days! More Oxford nostalgia was yet to come, however, when we went on to How Does It Feel, which was clearly what IMSoc wanted to be when it grew up. Funnily enough, half of IMSoc was there that night; K and I charmed the outgoing president with tales of the Olden Days of the Oxford indie scene, and when HDIF finished (far too early!) he invited us on to the Cellar, for another club with "more cheesy indie". Okay, so it turned out to be drum 'n' bass, or whatever the young people are calling it, but by that time I don't think any of us really cared.
The people at How Does It Feel took about a million photos and put them on their website; you can see K in not-actually-very-ironic hen-night getup towards the end of the photos page for May 13th, and there might even be a very blurry photo of me in there somewhere.
