The tuck shop has been replaced by a stationery cupboard. The change is so complete, so unprovisional, that I suddenly wonder if I have in fact been hallucinating the tuck shop for the past year or so: munching my way through chocolate-bar-sized highlighter pens, chugging back bottles of Tipp-ex, occasionally giving in to the temptation of a Tunnock's caramel printer cartridge.

How's your lunchbreak?

Long since over (I eat lunch at about 12 left to my own devices). A quick sandwich. A while ago I made a decision to take an hour at lunchtimes and do something different - read a book, go for a walk, achieve enlightenment by meditating on the cosmic wheel of karma, or something like that. I seem to have slipped back into stuffing my face with grub for 10 minutes while thinking about disk formatting and de-virusing a colleague's laptop.

That sounds familiar, modulo a slightly different variant on the head/brick interface.

My Use Lunchbreak Wisely resolutions have taken various forms: sitting in the common room and reading for an hour, going for a walk around the site, even doing different computer-based stuff (I started working through an hour of "Javascript in 24 hours" each lunchtime, but that only lasted for about three days).

Tomorrow lunchtime I'm doing a psychology experiment: exercise (bike into town and back), social usefulness (helping somebody else do their research), and CASH (about 6 quid).

I should bring more books into work to encourage me to read over lunch. Reading thick technical tomes over lunch seems liable to give me indigestion.

I was expecting a rather odd lunchbreak, having been invited to a working lunch with the title of "What turns engineers on?"

(Un?)fortunately it turned out to be to do with a new recruitment campaign; our parent company has hired some marketing consultants to find out how best to appeal to the type of people they want to attract. The result was three engineers in a room with a marketing consultant and a large plate of sandwiches and chocolate biscuits.

Could have been worse. At least the marketing consultant was quite human.

I expected this to end: at least the marketing consultant was quite tasty.

But apparently not.

Just to be absolutely clear, was that the result of the invitation or the result of the discussion?

Lunchbreak? Hmm, perhaps I should have breakfast.

Annoyingly the UL was still closed today. So I ate on site instead. Comfy chair - soup, yogurt and bana, and read "A Fourth Form Friendship". I like to take a full hour at lunch.

I had a similar feeling once when they removed a door at work, and replaced it with identical panelling to the walls either side of where it had once stood. Strangely, the effect was so good that I had a hard time convincing my colleagues - who had worked there much longer than I - that there did, indeed, used to be a door there.
