I still haven't finished Ulysses (FAIL!) partly because it's too hard to read in the bath, and I just keep re-reading Chalet School books instead. Writing this, however, I now find myself wondering about The Chalet School in Bloom (or vice - as it were - versa), which is probably going to make it hard to concentrate on reading either for quite some time.

Woo! Chalet School novels.

What fantastically rampant hotbeds of lesbian subtext they were. :-)

aaagh. agh. agh. aaaaaagh.

You know that the reason why Harold Bloom is the way he is is being a quarter fictitious on his grandfather Leopold's side ?

Janet was reluctant to post my revengeful suggestion of "Leavis and Butthead".

Please explain... for I am very dim, and I do not understand this ... in Bloom reference.

I read enormous numbers of Chalet School books when younger, and recently someone bought me a book whose name completely escapes me, which was basically a post-school telling of the lives of the Maynard triplets.

I have to say, as books go it was pretty awful. Badly written, and also written by someone who was determined to show how desperately hip and reality-driven they were by shoe-horning in every 'issue' they could think of: domestic violence, dementia, suicide, pre-marital-children, inter-racial relationships, meningitis... honestly, it was a proper barrel of laughs.

Leopold Bloom is the protagonist of Ulysses. Well, a protagonist. Well, an agonist. Wikipedia reminds me that there's a Leo Bloom in The Producers. Certainly Ulysses would be a commercial disaster as a musical.

That'll be The Chalet Girls Grow Up, which always sounds like a joke but I gather isn't.
