Sion and I spent the best part of 2 hours after work yesterday in MFI, trying to work out a design for our new kitchen with their kitchen consultant. The design they worked out all looked very shiny in the end, and sounds like a good deal price-wise (especially as they have a "45% off if you order before 18/12/02" offer on at the moment), but I think we need to get a couple of other suggestions worked out (either on our own or with other designers) before we go ahead with it.

Personally though I just can't wait to have real cupboards and drawers in our kitchen, however they're configured! For those who haven't seen it, our kitchen is huge but seems to have been designed so as to get the smallest amount of storage possible into the space available. (For example, there's only one drawer in the entire kitchen.) It's also orange, which while it may have a certain degree of 70s chic is a far cry from the metallic monochrome that I'm dreaming of.

I can't believe how expensive decent ovens and hobs are, though. Looked through a catalogue last night and every time I pointed at one and said "that's nice" it turned out to be the most expensive of the lot. I guess I should be pleased that my taste is that refined...

Are you asfter gas or electric? or a combination?

Can't wait to see the thing when it's done anyway.

I'm after a gas hob and an electric oven. Sion's still trying to convince me that some other kind of hob will do, but I can't remember the type of hob he was raving about. It's something electric-but-supposedly-as-good-as-gas, anyway, but I'm not convinced. For one thing, only a gas hob will have real flames with which I can do the clever tomato-peeling trick. :)

Probably halogen. They are pretty good, and much easier to keep clean than a gas hob, but yeah, I really like gas these days too and wouldn't want to go back. At some point we might get a real cooker point put in the kitchen so that we can have an electric oven too, but we're in no real rush.

I want to live in a Hundertwasser painting where mornings sound like Belle&Sebastian, afternoons like Radiohead and evenings like Portishead; where everything happens just like in Neil Gaiman's books; where all the men talk like Salinger and Hemingway, and think like Quinn and Coupland, and all the women are like Anne Sexton and Anais Nin. I want to take vacations in de Chirico's art to the soundtrack of Do Make Say Think, and go to work in a new explodingdog.com picture every day, on a street designed by Escher.
But I'd settle for a $1,000, a Canadian citizenship, and a loft in Vancouver.
Damn. Not even 21 yet, and already willing to compromise.
