The iPhone 3G comes out tomorrow.

  • The O2 shop in the Clarendon Centre will have "lots" in stock. It opens at 9am.
  • The Carphone Warehouse on Cornmarket will have 50 in stock (though you can put your name down today and sort of reserve one). It opens at 8am.
  • The Carphone Warehouse on Botley Road (on my way into work) is uncontactable by phone, ironically, so I have no idea when they open or how many iPhones they will have in stock.

[Poll #1220935]

ETA: the NOT AN OPTION bit was meant to appear at the end of the poll but LJ-poll-maker cocked it up! FAIL!

(This is not an attempt to be sarky, it's a genuine question.)

What's the appeal of having an iPhone right from the minute they come out ? Even if all shops in the Western world have sold out by the time you reach them tomorrow, there'll be another shipment along in a week or so (I assume?)

With, say, tickets where there's a hard limit on how many there are available I get why you'd want to be queueing up. But I presume that there isn't a limit with manufactured goods in the same way, there might just be a few weeks' wait. So why the rush ?

Manufactured excitement; or 'making your own entertainment' (-:

I could probably have avoided hearing spoilers for the last Harry Potter book, but it was fun waiting for midnight with like-minded people.

Oh, I can understand that such a thing might be fun in itself - but j4 wasn't saying "hey, I'm really looking forward to queueing for the iPhone with likeminded people".

Also books - though I've never bought a book on publication day (I don't think) can, as you say, go off due to spoilers.

Obviously you want technology before it's obsolete, I'm just trying to understand why you might want it now rather than next week.

Why would you want someone to give you presents on Christmas Day? If they waited till January and bought them in the sales, they'd be cheaper.

I almost wish I'd done the "buy one the instant it comes out" with the wii fit, or at least got my email address on one of the waiting lists: they're still not generally in stock anywhere now except on Amazon and Play's marketplaces at hugely overinflated prices.

They will come back. You couldn't get Wii Play at list price for anything around Christmas and I kept checking because I wanted one for my niece. When they still hadn't come in when Super Mario Kart came out I got her that instead, but I noticed in Game last week that they had hundreds now.

I'm in no rush for Wii Fit, I've not had time to play much Super Mario Galaxy yet. I can wait.

Actually I found somewhere online with a realtime pop-up stock checker, and got it from Amazon for RRP and free postage yesterday morning. Surprised at how simple it turned out to be.

Mario Kart seems pretty hard to find at the moment too :)

What's the appeal of having an iPhone right from the minute they come out?

Shared excitement -- discovering the new things about it as soon as they're there. In my case, having an iPhone to take with me to the nerdy conference I'm going to in 2 weeks' time.

I believe people have been known to queue up to see films on the first day they're released, too....? :-}

Also, for "in a week or so" read "I may be able to get one by September if I'm lucky". :-( IMHO Apple/O2 have seriously misjudged their usual creating-artificial-scarcity thing: there are a lot of people who would have gladly queued for another god-knows-how-many hours this morning, but now are just pissed off.
