Thought for the day

The folk I love
I do hate the folk I love---
They hurt so:
Their least word and act may be
Cause of woe.
'Won't you come to tea with me?'
'Not to-day;
I'm so tired, I've been to church.'
Such folk say.
All the dreary afternoon
I must clutch
At the strength to love like them---
Not too much.

Seems this love makes matters worse

Date: 2003-09-25 02:55 am (UTC)I'm sorry if I've not been a very good friend lately.

Date: 2003-09-25 03:25 am (UTC)If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you
If all men count with you, yet none too much

Date: 2003-09-25 03:33 am (UTC)Ye-es. (I have kippled, and I know I don't like it.)
If nothing can hurt you, you're probably dead.

Date: 2003-09-25 04:14 am (UTC)I aspire to being a Real Chalet School Girl. They don't bring their girls up to be "spineless jellyfish", you know.

Date: 2003-09-25 05:11 am (UTC)I find both Chalet and Abbey impenetrable, I'm afraid. I used to like Malory Towers, but now I'm horrified that I ever did. Some day I'm going to write an article about what my life would have been like if I'd had the misfortune to go to school in an Enid Blyton universe.

Date: 2003-09-25 06:51 am (UTC)Well, no, it'd be in a different state; but I'm far from convinced that it'd be in a better state, and I'm thoroughly unconvinced that individuals would be happier as a result.
I suppose it all rather depends on what one thinks "society" ought to be, and whether one regards the pursuit of individual happiness as A Good Thing.
I used to like Malory Towers, but now I'm horrified that I ever did.
Likewise, though for different reasons; I can't believe that I wasn't offended by the style, when I clearly remember being offended by similarly patronising attitudes from adults in real life.
I'm surprised you don't get on with the genre, though; the "schoolgirl code" is generally very keen on not whining, not sneaking, and standing on your own two feet without treading on other people's toes.
Some day I'm going to write an article about what my life would have been like if I'd had the misfortune to go to school in an Enid Blyton universe.
If you'd existed in Blyton's universe, you'd be too two-dimensional to write anything interesting about your life...
I honestly think I'd be a much happier person if I'd lived in the Chalet School universe. Though I'm less convinced that the flame and brown uniform would have suited me.

Date: 2003-09-25 03:39 am (UTC)I have no need for friendship
Friendship causes pain
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain

Date: 2003-09-25 03:43 am (UTC)(That phrase "it's laughter and it's loving I disdain" makes the back of my brain feel scratchy, because it would make sense -- of a kind -- with or without the apostrophes.)

Date: 2003-09-25 03:49 am (UTC)Yes, I noticed that too; which is why I left them in.
(I googled to make sure I go the words right).
