If I had just one wish (with no wishing-for-extra-wishes allowed) what do you think I would wish for?

A clear direction.

No, I already have that, but I have no way of implementing it.

If you were confident enough about the ability of the wish to be fulfilled, I think you would not make the wish immediately, you would spend a couple of years researching the likely consequences of what the result of your wish would be, then wish for something which would have an impact on the world rather than something to directly benefit yourself. A reasonable guess as to what this world-imapcting wish would be for is a wish for increased open-mindedness pertaining to sexuality around the world.

Alternatively, if you had to make the wish in thirty seconds or lose it forever, you would wish for either good health for your loved ones or, (that old practical standby) to inherit serious amounts of cash granting you and your loved ones security for life, from the extremely rich.

Nope. Wrong on all counts. Though good health for my loved ones is a nice fluffy idea. But who are "my loved ones"? Would one wish cover them all? Would they hate me for it? Experience suggests that when I give things to "my loved ones" they don't care and/or don't want the gifts anyway.

(BTW I'm amazed that you think sexuality is important enough to me that that'd be the focus of my wish for world open-mindedness!)

Right now, to be honest, I'd make an entirely selfish wish.

It seems to me that most benefit-the-whole-world-type wishes (of the style of cure x disease) would be likely to lead to unexpected displeasant consequences, but I find it hard to think of a displeasant consequence of greater global open-mindedness towards sexuality. Perhaps I'm just not trying hard enough!

If you don't mind me turning the question around, what is the selfish wish that you would wish for?

(Incidentally, I've been having fun trying to work out some sort of wish resulting in financial gain which wouldn't be likely to have disastrous consequences. Currently it's all looking a little Superman III funnel-the-half-pennies.)

I find it hard to think of a displeasant consequence of greater global open-mindedness towards sexuality

But if you're going to wish for greater open-mindedness, why not just keep it at that rather than narrowing it down to sexuality? If you have to choose one thing, why not, say, race or religion?

I guess I'm just surprised that you should think it was something that I personally would choose above all other things. Possibly because my sexuality is about as interesting to me as my inside leg measurement.

I'm not telling you what the selfish wish is, not until everybody who's going to guess has guessed. And I'm more interested in what people guess than whether or not they get it "right".

I've been having fun trying to work out some sort of wish resulting in financial gain which wouldn't be likely to have disastrous consequences

I wouldn't want infinite riches or anything like that. But I don't see how wiping out my debts and those of my loved ones would have any "disastrous consequences". It seems somehow a waste of a once-in-a-lifetime single wish, but hey.

Everyone to understand each other.

That would be terrible. If we all understood each other to start with, what would we do (what would we ever do)?

Well, yes, it is kind of jumping ahead to the end isn't it.

(I imagine some of us would just quietly slide out of existence, or settle into some more passive state. Some would carry on trying to understand things that no-one had worked out yet, or higher-level patterns in the things we had. And some would make or find new things to interest them.)

Perhaps just some new ways for people to get closer to understanding, at the points where it gets really frustrating.

Don't mind my incoherent babblings...

If it'd have to be instantaneous, probably that only people who care about the Public Good more than their own would become politicians.

But, halt!, that's my wish, and I don't know you well enough to tell if it'd match yours.

Right now, I'm wishing selfish wishes. But yours is quite a good wish, so I might just tell the genie he got the wrong guy.

The ability to leap tall buildings with a single bound.

Nah....
DC Comics sucked, really. Marvel was where the action was.

Depends on when and where you were reading them; I'll stack Grant Morrison's run on JLA, or Kingdom Come, up against anything Marvel did at the same time that wasn't written by Peter David.

Between about 1962 and 1974. DC was basically Superman & Batman. Marvel had Thor, Dr Strange, Silver Surfer, etc.
