Oh, go on then...
Mar. 4th, 2003 03:20 pmFill in the blanks:
I ____ j4.
j4 is ____.
If I were alone in a room with j4, I would _______.
I think j4 should _____.
j4 needs ______.
I want to ____________ j4.
I'd like to know who says what, but I don't really mind anonymous responses. Really I'd just like to see as many responses as possible, because it's moderately interesting and IT'S NOT ANOTHER BLOODY CLICKY-BOXEY AM-I-GOTH-OR-NOT QUIZ.
And I must say, actually, it'd be refreshing to see some honest-to-goodness dirty responses to this meme. Or is everybody too polite and too British to say things like "I want to fuck [whoever]", or "[whoever] needs a damn good seeing-to"?

Of course, I'd still very much like to see you play Rez some day even without libidinous distractions.
Well, if you manage to get to Cambridge for May Day weekend, then you'll have an opportunity to see me play it (although somebody will have to drag me off the console at some point before I bore the pants off everybody else).
Not sure I have particular feelings about synaesthesia myself, but quite possibly Rez is unusually good at triggering latent thoughts which hadn't previously come to the surface.
I get to a point where I know how playing the game well sounds. That's strange, but interesting. Different objects in the game have different sounds and vibration-patterns. It's very peculiar. It's probably not really classic synaesthesia, but it's certainly an interesting mingling of sensations. And besides, it's pretty.
Maybe you just want Rez as it is, but more of the same and only more so?
What I want is to be in an enclosed space which (presumably by means of huge flat-screens and mirrors and stuff) gives you the impression of being in the game, floating along and shooting at things. Ideally you'd need to feel weightless as well. The music would be surround-sound, and you'd be wearing some kind of full-body suit which allowed you to experience the vibrations all over your body. (There could even be, er, "custom attachments" for this suit if you wanted a more, um, intense full-sensory experience. But I honestly think the game would be cool enough on its own.) The suit would also have some kind of button to press when you want to shoot things, and you'd be able to see the beams of light shooting from your fingers. You'd also be able to look down at yourself and see what "form" you're in (you change forms as you gain more energy or what-have-you).
What? No, of course I have no idea how this would actually work. I'm an artist and a visionary, not a bloody engineer! ;-)

Understood. The shape seems to be highly generic, as opposed to specifically genital. I'm not sure whether the vibration patterns are deliberately stronger at one end or the other, but I suspect not. (Besides, I do think men could enjoy the strong vibrations somehow too, though with rather more jury-rigging.) I hope I'm not getting into areas where you find discussion uncomfortable or uncomfortably personal.
Have to say that I often enjoy watching people play video games and pinball well more than I enjoy playing them badly myself - and, in this case, I suspect hearing as well. Without going too far down the above-beaten track, given that the feeling sensation is such a strong part of the game, I wonder if the game will output vibration patterns to rumble packs in spare joypads etc. for other players to enjoy as well?

*nods* I'm well prepared to believe that. The closest thing I can compare this to are the music games where players are at least partly rewarded for building up an accurate rhythm by the fact that the rhythm they build up sounds accurately rhythmical, or rhythmical to the extent which sounds natural to our culture.
And besides, it's pretty.
Justification enough, particularly for a game.
I do like the full-surround Rez idea a lot. Thoughts I have: suspension of your body between springs above and below, possibly with elements of pneumatic powering to raise and lower your body, change the direction in which you're oriented and so forth. I'm thinking that you probably have to squeeze your fingers together how as the most intuitive "shoot" trigger response. I anticipate that your current form would be projected onto your body somehow, though how this would interact with your suit is tricky.
Unrealistic? Yes. Impossible? No. A one-off for an arcade, a theme park or a software company in Japan? Distinctly conceivable, I'd say. Not really that much further an advance from the R-360 G-LOC games, Vertical Reality (sic) and the like than they were from (say) the first generation of arcade-games-plus-motion (After Burner, Space Harrier, Out Run, WEC Le Mans and so forth). The existence of one such unit by 2015? More likely than not, but I wouldn't wager much on it.
I'd also like to play Virtual Reality Bubble Bobble, but that's just me.
*happy thoughts about the concept of future games in general* :-)
